Preserving the Past.
Empowering the Future.

Founded by Indigenous Creative Innovation, Cultural Ambassador and Indigepreneur Uncle John Smith-Gumbula

INDIGENETICS® and INDIGEDNA® Australia were conceived more than a decade ago from a simple yet powerful vision, to create a culturally led Indigenous ancestry, genealogy and heritage platform that respects the world's oldest continuing cultures while embracing modern science and technology.

Our long-term vision is to establish Australia's first Indigenous-led ancestry and genealogy platform, developed in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, Elders, researchers, scientists, universities and strategic industry partners.

Looking beyond Australia, INDIGENETICS® and INDIGEDNA® aspires to collaborate with Indigenous peoples around the world, recognising that Indigenous communities represent approximately six percent of the global population and share a deep commitment to protecting cultural identity, ancestry and traditional knowledge.

Our Vision

To become the world's leading Indigenous-owned platform dedicated to preserving, researching and celebrating Indigenous ancestry, genealogy, cultural identity and heritage through ethical innovation and respectful partnerships.

Our Mission

To combine Indigenous cultural knowledge with modern science, genealogy, digital technology and historical research to help families better understand their ancestral stories while ensuring Indigenous data sovereignty, cultural respect and community leadership remain central to every stage of development.

Why INDIGENETICS®
and INDIGEDNA® ?

Australia is home to approximately 1.08 million Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, representing around 4% of the national population.

Australia's First Nations include:

One of the oldest continuous living cultures on Earth, extending back more than 65,000 years according to current archaeological evidence.

Every Nation, every family and every community carries unique histories that deserve to be preserved for future generations.

What We Aim
to Offer

Future development of the INDIGENETICS® and INDIGEDNA® platform may include:

  • Indigenous family genealogy research.
  • Historical archival research.
  • Family history documentation.
  • Cultural heritage recording.
  • Digital family tree creation.
  • Ancestral migration storytelling informed by historical, cultural and, where appropriate, genetic research.
  • Secure digital heritage records.
  • Indigenous oral history preservation.
  • Indigenous language and Nation mapping.
  • Community-led cultural knowledge projects.
  • Educational resources for future generations.

Where genetic ancestry services are included, they would be provided through appropriately accredited scientific partners and interpreted alongside historical, genealogical and cultural information, not as a sole determinant of Indigenous identity.
